More Sub-Pop goodness from Record Store Day

Artist: Happy Birthday
Title: "Shampoo" b/w "Alien"
Label: Sub-Pop Records
Release date: April 17, 2010

Kyle Thomas of King Tuff and honorary fifth Vivian Girl fame and his Sub-Pop group Happy Birthday also had an exclusive 7" come out on Record Store Day.

Happy Birthday's Sub-Pop LP has been played a lot here at 7" Atlanta headquarters since it came out, mainly because "Girls FM" is neck and neck with a song Thomas recorded in the "Best Song of 2010" race. Needless to say, expectations were high when I first dropped the needle, and Happy Birthday did not spoil my listening party.

Those of us who are used to two minute songs will not get bored before "Shampoo" ends, because there is all kinds of futuristic racket going on and, most importantly, there's a catchy hook.

"Alien" (the other thing that battles Predator, har har!) is a songwriting and weird-out pop clinic that could only be taught by Thomas.

These songs are good enough to be on the second Happy Birthday album or at least some kind of Sub-Pop compilation, as they need to be heard by more than us collector types.
